The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) presents HIS Glory, a series of 12 mixed media works by Beaumont artist and art educator Jackie Stubblefield, on view in Café Arts Aug. 5 through Nov. 1.
HIS Glory is made up of 12 mixed media works that are loosely titled “art quilts” by Stubblefield, due to the use of fabric and other materials. The pieces were conceived of as narrative works that comment on Old and New Testament Christian teachings. While Stubblefield has worked in oil painting for the last 30 years, using the medium of fabric is a new approach for her in this body of work.
“These fabric pieces are my praise book, loosely a book of hours, where the idea began,” Stubblefield said. “These are in groups of two: prophecy and fulfillment. Prophecy concerns different furniture from the wilderness tabernacle in the Old Testament of the Bible. Fulfillment is Jesus Christ.”
Stubblefield has worked in the art field over 20 years as a writer, teacher, artist and gallery owner. From 1990 to 1994, she owned and ran the Stubblefield Gallery in Beaumont representing over 50 local, regional, and out-of-state artists. In 1998, she earned her bachelor of fine arts degree from Lamar University. Stubblefield’s work has appeared in numerous juried exhibitions in Texas and other U.S. locations since the 1970s.
HIS Glory is part of AMSET’s continued mission to feature local artists in Café Arts. The exhibition is open for viewing during regular museum hours. Two Magnolias serves lunch in Café Arts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, contact AMSET at (409) 832-3432 or visit www.amset.org.
